General Travel Tips
We’ve had many “lessons learned” along the way, some from other trips, others from our world voyage. Not all the tips fall nicely in other pages, so here is a brainstorm list of tips that may help you on an international family trip:
Drinking Water — When staying at hotels, get filtered drinking water at hotel gyms
Priority Pass — This membership, which comes with several premium credit cards, are fantastic for utilizing airport lounges. With shared credit card accounts, the couple can each get a membership, and each member can bring a guest, for a total of four people.
Local SIM Cards — Get local SIM cards for data, buy local SIM cards at airports or local stores. Install Google Voice, Google Hangout or other VOIP apps.
Carry-On Luggage Limit — Many international airlines are strict with ridiculously-low weight limit (e.g. 15 lbs) for carry-ons. Pay attention to these limits. If you need to, pay for check-in luggage in advance to avoid ridiculous prices at the airport.
Liquids — If checking in some luggage, put all liquid in the checked-in luggage. In some countries, they allow water on domestic flights, so be sure to check before pouring it out.
Laptop/iPad for everyone — Everyone will need a device on home-school days, sharing doesn’t work. Suck it up and bring a laptop /iPad for everyone.
USB Charging Hub & Universal Plug Adapter: Be sure to bring two universal plug adapters and one USB charging hub for all your electronics.
Don’t over-pack consumables — You can always buy these on the road.
When to load up on groceries — If traveling by car for 2+ weeks, can buy condiments and larger-quantity items.
Sneakers or shoes? — Hiking shoes (low-cut) with tough soles and good traction are nice. They’re heavier, but you can wear them on transit days, so the weight isn’t an issue. If you’re a runner, however, sneakers may be better for you.
